Women of Colour at Tropic gave us their hero products.
Tropic Skincare is one of the coolest brands on the block with a cult following: vegan, made from naturally-derived ingredients by the Chefs in the Tropic Kitchen. Tropic products are freshly made and come with a “use by” date just like your food.
Tropic was founded by Susie Ma. Susie was born in Shanghai and she later relocated to Australia and then the UK. She started Tropic by selling home-made products at Greenwich Market when she was 15! Now, Tropic is one of the fastest growing companies in the UK with a super loyal fan base.
We spoke to Mica Benjamin and Aminah Blanchard, who work at Tropic and they gave us their top 10 Tropic products – the products they can’t live without. Mica is a Creative Product Developer and Aminah is a Skincare Specialist at Tropic Skincare.
So here we go!
Clear Skies
“This is one of our top-selling products. A soothing, effective, non-abrasive cleanser that combats blemishes without causing any aggravation or inflammation, which can lead to pigmentation in brown and black skin tones.” - Aminah
Glow Berry
“Great for tackling pigmentation. Skin of colour is not only more prone to hyperpigmentation/scarring, but it also takes longer to fade. Vitamin C is known for being one of the best ingredients for many kinds of pigmentation.”- Aminah
Fruit Peel
“This resurfacing serum has a combination of exfoliating acids and enzymes. You can combat multiple skin concerns, (including oily, blemish, or acne-prone skin) without the risk of further pigmentation or inflammation. Tip: always make sure that you wear an SPF daily when using this product.” - Aminah
Sun Day
“Busting the skincare myth of darker skin not needing an SPF, this is false! Mineral or higher factor SPFs can leave a white cast on darker skin but Tropic’s Sun Day leaves no cast and doesn’t compromise on high factor protection.” Aminah
Nourishing Hair Cleanser
“I cannot live without this product. It’s a co-wash – shampoo and conditioner in one. I have never used anything else on my hair since using this. I’m black and if I don’t put conditioner in my hair it’s a mess. With this product, I can skip the conditioner step. It really emphasises my curls as well. Usually, when I wash my hair I need to put products in it straight away while its wet to avoid it getting frizzy or losing the curl pattern. With this, even before I put anything on my hair is soft and its got moisture in it and looks so pretty. Detangling is also usually a nightmare! This makes detangling really easy for me. ” - Mica
Sunset Cream Highlighter
“Obsessed with this highlighter. It’s beautiful on top of makeup to give your skin a nice glow and sheen but my favourite thing about this is it looks beautiful without makeup on as well. So after you finish your skincare routine, you can just apply this on the high points of your face and it will make your natural skin look beautiful.” Mica
Dare Lip Pencil
“This is an easy soft brown lipliner which works well with lots of lipstick colours. A trick I often teach people is to use your lipliner to blend different lipstick colours. Something like Lush Lychee which is one of our lightest colours can be intimidating to a darker skin cos it can look grey or white on a darker lip but you can use a slightly darker liner which can get rid of that cast. You will be surprised by how many colours you can try with this trick!” - Mica
Toffee Spice Lip Glaze
“It’s got a lot of warmth and a high pigment in the gloss. Sometimes a gloss doesn’t cover your lip tone properly when you have darker lips but the high pigment in this and warm tone is very flattering on darker skin. It’s a very pretty colour.” - Mica
Coffee Cherry Cream Blusher
“Beautiful on dark skin tones. Makes the cheeks look radiant and gives you a natural rosy look. It’s really nice also as a lip tint if you just press into your lips.” - Mica
Meteor Eye Shadow
“A bronzy brown shade with gold specks. The colour is deep so you can also use it for a smokey eye if you want to. Its also really nice to define the eye line with this eyeshadow. Everyone needs a good brown eye shadow and the little sparkle makes it a bit more glam.” - Mica
